Here is how to get cited by ChatGPT. Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt and your CDN, and get your pages indexed in Bing. Publish answer-first pages that cover the sub-questions ChatGPT searches for, and refresh them on a schedule. Earn a few off-site mentions, then track your mention rate across many prompts. No one can guarantee a citation, but these steps raise your odds.

Key takeaways

  • OAI-SearchBot controls whether ChatGPT search can show your pages. Block it and you can appear only as a navigational link.
  • ChatGPT citations track Bing closely. Seer Interactive found 87% matched Bing's top 20 results, against 56% for Google's.
  • Answer-first structure, original data and fresh dates are the on-page levers with the best evidence behind them.
  • Measure mention rate across 25-50 prompts, run repeatedly. One manual check tells you almost nothing.

What You Need Before You Start

You need edit access to robots.txt and your CDN, a Bing Webmaster Tools account, 3-5 pages that answer buyer questions, and a tracking spreadsheet. You also need realistic expectations: ChatGPT citations are probabilistic, not guaranteed.

Prerequisites checklist

  • Site access: permission to edit robots.txt and change firewall or bot settings in your CDN (Cloudflare, for example).
  • Bing Webmaster Tools: a verified property for your domain, so you can submit sitemaps and check indexing.
  • 3-5 target pages: existing or planned pages that answer real buyer questions, such as "What is the best CRM for a 5-person agency?"
  • A prompt list: 25-50 questions your customers would type into ChatGPT.
  • A spreadsheet: columns for prompt, date, whether you were mentioned, whether you were linked, and which competitors appeared.
  • Two to four hours a week for the next 30 days.

What 'cited' means and why no one can guarantee it

Three terms get mixed up constantly. Keep them apart, because you will track each one separately.

Citation: a source link that ChatGPT attaches to its answer, pointing to your page.

Mention: your brand name appears in the answer text, with or without a link.

Mention rate: the share of prompts in your test set where your brand appears, measured over many runs.

ChatGPT answers are non-deterministic. The same prompt can produce different sources an hour later. Retrieval is also much wider than citation. A Kevin Indig study reported by Search Engine Land found ChatGPT pulls about 6x more pages than it cites. Ahrefs' analysis of 1.4 million prompts found it cites only about half of the URLs it retrieves.

Credit is uneven too. A study of about 14,000 conversations, "The Attribution Crisis in LLM Search Results", found 61% of answers used more sites than they credited. Your job is to raise your odds, not to flip a switch.

Tip: Several figures in this space circulate second-hand through vendor blogs. Where a primary source exists, it is linked here. Check the numbers at source before you quote them in a pitch deck.

How Does ChatGPT Decide Which Sources to Cite?

ChatGPT runs live web searches, splits your prompt into smaller sub-queries, retrieves pages, and then cites a fraction of them. Its search results lean heavily on Bing. Pages that are crawlable, indexed in Bing and directly answer a sub-query have the best chance.

Live search, retrieval and query fan-out

When a prompt needs current information, ChatGPT searches the web and feeds the results into its answer. This is retrieval-augmented generation.

Query fan-out: the process of breaking one prompt into several narrower searches, typically one to five keyword phrases each.

Fan-out matters more than most people expect. In the Indig study, a third of cited pages came from fan-out queries. Of those, 95% had zero search volume. Your keyword tool will not show you these searches, so you have to anticipate them.

Why Bing indexing matters

Does ChatGPT use Bing or Google? The evidence points to Bing. Seer Interactive found 87% of ChatGPT search citations matched Bing's top 20 results, against 56% for Google's. If Bing has not indexed a page, ChatGPT search is unlikely to find it.

Retrieved is not the same as cited

Citations are concentrated. The Indig study found roughly 30 domains capture 67% of citations within a topic. In product comparison topics, the top 10 domains took 46%. For a small site, the lesson is simple: own a narrow topic instead of covering everything thinly.

How Do You Get Cited by ChatGPT? The 7-Step Plan

Work in this order: open crawler access, confirm indexing, map one topic cluster, write answer-first pages, refresh them, earn outside mentions, then measure. Each step depends on the one before it, so skipping ahead wastes effort.

Seven wooden blocks arranged as a staircase illustrating a step-by-step plan for AI citations

Step 1: Allow OAI-SearchBot and check your CDN and robots.txt

Open robots.txt and confirm OAI-SearchBot is not disallowed. According to OpenAI's crawler documentation, OAI-SearchBot is used to surface sites in ChatGPT's search features. Sites that opt out will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though they can still appear as navigational links.

OpenAI recommends allowing OAI-SearchBot and its published IP ranges, listed in its searchbot.json file. Then log into your CDN. Cloudflare's default settings now block AI bots, according to an interview published by aitoolssme, so check bot-management and firewall rules too.

You should now see OAI-SearchBot allowed in robots.txt and no CDN rule blocking it.

Step 2: Confirm your content is readable in raw HTML and indexed in Bing

View the page source of each target page, not the rendered page. AI bots read raw HTML. One example in the aitoolssme piece describes a pricing page that showed bots only a loading spinner, because prices loaded through JavaScript.

  • Move key answers out of tabs, accordions and client-side widgets.
  • Remove paywalls or login walls from pages you want cited.
  • Submit your sitemap in Bing Webmaster Tools.
  • Use URL inspection to confirm each target page is indexed.

You should now see your main text in the page source and each target page listed as indexed in Bing.

Step 3: Map one fan-out cluster around a buyer question

Pick one buyer question your business can answer better than anyone. List 5-10 sub-questions ChatGPT would likely search to answer it. For "best invoicing app for freelancers", sub-questions might include pricing, tax handling, multi-currency support and alternatives.

Coverage pays. Surfer reports pages ranking for the main query plus its fan-outs were 161% more likely to be cited in AI Overviews. In its analysis of 57,253 URLs, cited pages covered 31% of a topic's key facts, against 24% for uncited pages. Those are Google figures, but the same coverage logic applies to ChatGPT retrieval.

You should now see a cluster map: one main page and a list of sub-questions, each assigned to a section or supporting page.

Step 4: Write answer-first pages with original data, quotes and clear structure

Put the direct answer in the first 100 words and at the top of every section. Surfer found 38% of AI Overview citations come from a page's first 100 words. Keep one idea per section, and use tables for comparisons and numbered lists for steps.

Add evidence. The Princeton GEO study tested nine methods on 10,000 queries. Adding quotations improved visibility by about 41%, and adding statistics by about 33%. A separate study found restructuring content without changing its meaning raised citation rates by 17.3% across six engines.

Length and headings correlate too. A study of 21,143 citations found pages in the top quarter for citation influence averaged about 1,943 words and 10.6 headings. An AI outline generator can help you plan that structure before you write.

You should now see pages that answer the question immediately, with sourced numbers, a quote or original data point, and scannable headings.

Step 5: Refresh your best pages on a schedule

Update each target page at least quarterly with real changes, and show a visible updated date. Ahrefs analysed about 17 million cited URLs and found AI assistants cite content 25.7% fresher than Google organic results.

You may read that citations drop sharply after three months. That comes from one interviewee in the aitoolssme article, not from a study. Treat it as a reasonable rule of thumb. A refresh means new data, new examples or corrected facts, not a changed date alone.

You should now see a refresh calendar with a date against every target page.

Step 6: Earn a few off-site mentions where AI sources look

Get your brand named on the third-party pages ChatGPT tends to retrieve. Alhena lists seven source types worth targeting:

  • Editorial reviews and buying guides
  • Expert roundups and best-of lists
  • Comparison and affiliate sites
  • Reddit and other forums
  • Q&A sites
  • YouTube reviews
  • Wikipedia and knowledge bases, where you genuinely qualify

Alhena recommends 3-5 roundup placements per quarter and says editorial reviews typically generate AI citations within 4 to 6 weeks. Both are vendor claims, so use them as planning guides rather than benchmarks. Never fake reviews or seed forums with sock-puppet accounts.

You should now see at least two or three genuine third-party pages that mention your brand in context.

Step 7: Build a prompt set and track mention rate

Write 25-50 prompts that match how your buyers ask questions, as Surfer suggests. Weight them toward bottom-of-funnel prompts, such as comparisons and "best X for Y" questions. Run the full set on a fixed schedule, ideally weekly.

  • Log whether you were mentioned, linked, and in what position versus competitors.
  • Calculate mention rate: prompts with a mention divided by prompts run.
  • Check server logs for the ChatGPT-User agent, which signals user-initiated fetches.
  • Watch GA4 for referral traffic from chatgpt.com.

Do not rely on API outputs as a proxy. Surfer says API results overlap with what users see by only 15.5%-31.6%. For a quick first read, try the free AI visibility checker, then move to repeated tracking.

You should now see a baseline mention rate you can compare against every month.

What Does a 30-Day Plan to Get Cited by ChatGPT Look Like?

A small team can cover the minimum viable set in 30 days: crawler access, Bing indexing, three answer-first pages, one refresh, a few mentions and a baseline measurement. Structural fixes can show up in answers within days, per Surfer, while authority builds over months.

Week Task Time needed Expected output
1 Robots.txt, CDN rules, raw-HTML check, Bing submission 2-3 hours Crawlable, indexed target pages
2 Pick one buyer question, map 5-10 sub-questions 2-3 hours Cluster map for three pages
3 Write or rewrite three answer-first pages with data and quotes 6-10 hours Three published pages
4 Pitch two or three roundups or reviews, run prompt set 3-4 hours Outreach sent, baseline mention rate

Week 1: access and indexing

Fix crawler access on day one; it takes minutes. Spend the rest of the week checking page source and submitting your sitemap to Bing. Nothing else in this plan works until bots can read your pages.

Week 2: one cluster, three pages

Choose one buyer question and resist adding a second. Assign the main question to a pillar page and the strongest sub-questions to two supporting pages. Link all three together.

Week 3: publish, structure and add data

Publish the three pages with answers in the first 100 words. Add at least one original data point per page, such as a pricing table, a survey of your customers or a timed test. Cite every outside statistic.

Week 4: first mentions and baseline measurement

Send outreach to relevant roundups and review sites. Run your full prompt set and record the baseline. Schedule the first refresh for the oldest target page.

Keeping this rhythm going is the hard part. A daily publishing and refresh workflow, such as OverSerp's 30-day content plan, supports the freshness finding by keeping new and updated pages flowing. One OverSerp customer reported organic clicks up 212%, but that is one customer's result, not a guarantee for every site.

Which OpenAI Crawler Should You Allow: OAI-SearchBot, GPTBot or ChatGPT-User?

Allow OAI-SearchBot if you want to appear in ChatGPT search answers. GPTBot is a separate control you can decide on independently. ChatGPT-User handles user-initiated actions and is not used to decide search inclusion.

Crawler comparison table

Crawler Purpose Affects ChatGPT search inclusion? robots.txt applies? Recommendation
OAI-SearchBot Surfaces sites in ChatGPT search features Yes Yes Allow it, plus its published IP ranges
ChatGPT-User User-initiated actions, such as fetching a page a user asked about No May not apply Monitor it in server logs
GPTBot Separate OpenAI robots.txt control Not the search control Yes Read OpenAI's docs, then decide on its own merits

Robots.txt and CDN checklist

A minimal robots.txt entry looks like this:

User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /

# Decide on GPTBot separately after reading OpenAI's crawler documentation
  1. Remove any Disallow: / rule that applies to OAI-SearchBot or to all user agents.
  2. Open your CDN's bot-management settings and look for AI-bot blocking toggles.
  3. Allowlist OpenAI's published OAI-SearchBot IP ranges in your firewall.
  4. Check server logs a week later for OAI-SearchBot requests.
  5. Re-check after any CDN or security-plugin update, since defaults can change.

What about llms.txt and schema?

Neither is a proven lever for ChatGPT citations. Google's AI optimization guidance says there is no special schema for its AI features. The aitoolssme interviewee says AI bots do not read schema, though it still helps Google rankings.

Treat schema as hygiene for entity clarity, not a citation switch. If you want FAQ markup anyway, a FAQ schema generator handles the JSON-LD. None of the sources reviewed confirms that llms.txt influences ChatGPT. Adding one is optional and low-effort, nothing more.

Domain authority is not a gate, but backlinks still help indirectly through search rankings. Reddit matters for some queries, yet brand-managed sources make up most AI citations overall. Fix your own site and listings first.

Authority vs backlinks

Surfer reports domain authority had almost zero correlation with citations, based on about 5 million cited URLs and 20,000 prompts. The aitoolssme interviewee argues backlinks help twice: they lift rankings and correlate with brand appearances in Common Crawl.

Both can be true. Links help you rank in Bing, and Bing rankings feed ChatGPT search. Authority scores alone do not decide citations, so a small site with precise answers can compete.

Reddit vs brand-owned sources

Alhena puts Reddit near the top of its off-site list. Yext's analysis of 6.8 million AI citations tells a different story: 86% came from brand-managed sources, with websites at 44% and listings at 42%. Forums such as Reddit made up 2%.

The mix varies by query type. Opinion and recommendation prompts pull more forum content than factual ones. Start with accurate business listings and a consistent brand name and description everywhere. Then add genuine community participation.

Does AI-generated content get cited?

Yes, if it is useful, accurate and contains something original. Thin, generic pages are rarely cited, however they were written. Add real data, examples and sourced numbers to every page.

Why Isn't ChatGPT Citing My Site? Troubleshooting and Common Mistakes

Most failures trace back to blocked crawlers, missing Bing indexing, JavaScript-only content or a topic that is too broad. Diagnose the symptom first, then apply the matching fix.

Troubleshooting table: symptom, likely cause, fix

Symptom Likely cause Fix
Never appears at all OAI-SearchBot blocked, page not in Bing, JavaScript-only content Repeat Steps 1 and 2
Content used but not credited Attribution gap: 61% of answers use more sites than they credit Add unique data and clear claims worth citing
Cited once, then gone Non-deterministic answers or stale content Track over many runs; refresh the page
Competitors dominate every answer About 30 domains take 67% of citations in a topic Narrow to a sub-topic you can own
Mentioned but never linked Brand known from third-party sources, weak own page Strengthen the page that answers the prompt

Mistakes that waste time

  • Judging results from one manual prompt.
  • Blocking OAI-SearchBot while wanting ChatGPT visibility.
  • Putting answers behind paywalls, logins or tabs.
  • Stuffing pages with statistics that have no source.
  • Chasing every AI platform at once.
  • Creating fake reviews or forum mentions.

When this is not the right priority

Skip AI citation work for now if you have no indexable content yet, or if your Google SEO basics are broken. It is also low priority if buyers never research your category with questions or comparisons.

Keep the scale in view. SE Ranking found AI referral traffic was about 0.32% of all website traffic in early 2026, though it had grown about sixteenfold. Seer Interactive found brands cited in AI Overviews earned about 120% more organic clicks per impression. Treat other figures, such as a claimed 70% ChatGPT market share or vendor conversion rates, as unverified.

How Do ChatGPT, AI Overviews and Perplexity Differ for Citations?

Each platform retrieves differently, but the same structural fixes carry over. ChatGPT leans on Bing, AI Overviews draw on Google, and Perplexity runs its own crawler. Start with ChatGPT plus Bing, then extend.

Three glass tiles lit by separate light paths, showing how AI search platforms differ

Platform differences table

Platform Main retrieval source What to optimize Tracking method
ChatGPT Live search, closely matching Bing OAI-SearchBot access, Bing indexing, answer-first pages Prompt set, ChatGPT-User logs, GA4 referrals
Google AI Overviews Google's index and fan-out queries Fan-out coverage, first 100 words, local rankings Prompt set in each target market
Perplexity Live web search via PerplexityBot PerplexityBot access, fresh sourced content Prompt set, referral traffic
Gemini Google ecosystem (verify current docs) Same structural fixes as AI Overviews Prompt set
Claude Varies by product; check provider docs Crawlable, answer-first pages Prompt set

Surfer's study of 10,000 keywords found 67.82% of pages cited in AI Overviews did not rank in the top 10 for the query or its fan-outs. AI answers also use local results, so a page ranking in the UK may not be cited for US searches. Rank in each market you sell to.

Which platform to prioritize first

Start with ChatGPT and Bing. The crawler access, raw-HTML and answer-first fixes all transfer to the other platforms. Platform behaviour changes quickly, so date-stamp your notes and re-verify every quarter. OverSerp's AI visibility tracking monitors citations in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude, plus AI Overviews, on every plan.

Start Small and Measure Often

Citations come from a sequence, not a trick. Open access, get indexed in Bing, own one cluster with answer-first pages, keep them fresh and earn real mentions. Then measure mention rate over many prompts, never one.

If writing and refreshing pages every week is the bottleneck, OverSerp publishes an SEO and AI-search optimised article every day, on autopilot. Start your 3-day free trial and your first article goes live tomorrow.

Blocking GPTBot while allowing OAI-SearchBot is a valid setup. OpenAI documents them as separate robots.txt controls, and OAI-SearchBot is the crawler that decides inclusion in ChatGPT search answers. Read OpenAI's crawler documentation for GPTBot's current purpose, then decide on GPTBot independently of your ChatGPT search visibility.
